Downtown Farmers' Market Begins Fall Hours This Saturday

DES MOINES, IOWA – The Downtown Farmers’ Market presented by UnityPoint Health – Des Moines will begin its fall hours of 8 a.m. to Noon each Saturday during the month of October. The Market takes place every Saturday morning from May 7 through Oct. 29, 2016, spanning nine city blocks in the Historic Court District. With only five Saturdays left in the season, patrons are encouraged to enjoy everything The Market has to offer.

Farmers and producers from 58 counties fill the Historic Court District with a variety of current, in-season fall produce including apples, beets, Brussels sprouts, carrots, greens and lettuces, onions, parsnips, peppers, potatoes, pumpkins, tomatoes, turnips, sweet potatoes and winter squash. The Market will feature a variety of farm fresh eggs, Iowa-raised meat, cheese, baked goods and wine. Patrons can stock up on items for tailgates, Halloween parties and other fall get-togethers.

The Market also features live entertainment including local musicians and bands, as well as special programming each Saturday. Special programming provided by market sponsors and partners in October will include:

  • The Meals from the Market program sponsored by Great Western Bank will be open to collect garden-fresh food donations from Market vendors and patrons every Saturday with special programming.
  • UnityPoint Health – Des Moines will be on site each Saturday to offer programming to help patrons Live Well. On Oct. 1, experts from Blank Children’s Hospital will be on hand with fun activities for families to learn about eating healthy. On Oct. 22, patrons can learn the difference between colds and the flu and how to prevent both this winter. On Oct. 29, UnityPoint Health – Des Moines volunteers will have fun prizes for trick-or-treaters.

The Downtown Farmers’ Market began in 1976 with just 15 vendors and an average of 200 shoppers. Today, in its 41st season, The Market supports more than 300 vendors and welcomes an average of 25,000 visitors each Saturday. The Downtown Farmers’ Market has been recognized nationally by publications including The Daily Meal, Shape MagazineMidwest Living Magazine and Country Living Magazine.
