Startup Aims to Advance Agriculture by Eliminating Piglet Deaths
GREATER DES MOINES, IA (March 9, 2018) — The son and grandson of Iowa farmers is using his entrepreneurial drive to advance innovation in agriculture.
FarrPro CEO Amos Petersen will be the presenter at the March Startup Stories event at the Greater Des Moines Partnership. It will feature an interview-style discussion with Partnership Executive Director of Entrepreneurial Initiatives Mike Colwell and Petersen, which will be recorded live for a future podcast. The event is scheduled for Wednesday, March 21 at the Greater Des Moines Partnership, 700 Locust St.
FarrPro is focused on eliminating premature deaths of piglets. Petersen is the creator of the Haven, FarrPro’s flagship product, which acts as a replacement to inefficient heat lamps in farrowing facilities. Piglets need an environment of 90-to-95 degrees to stay healthy. Commonly-used heat lamps heat piglets unevenly and create significant waste of heat. The Haven helps provide an even dispersal of heat to piglets to reduce mortality and energy costs.
Petersen grew up on a farm in southeast Iowa, which has shaped his view on agriculture and the technological advances that can improve it. He is an impressive mixture of theorist, economist and determined doer. Before founding FarrPro, Petersen built and sold EccoCast, a rural internet and communications provider. Startup Stories attendees will hear about the amazing, sometimes brutally fast growth of his hardware company. They will learn how he is leveraging existing research and technology in entirely new ways to solve long-standing problems with tremendous financial upside.
