Westrum Produce Marks 25 Years at the Downtown Farmers' Market

Westrum Produce at the Des Moines Downtown Farmers' Mar

For 25 years, Cindy and Mark Westrum have brought their produce to the Downtown Farmers’ Market. Located in Stratford, Iowa, Westrum Produce grow vegetables, corn and soybeans. Originally Cindy made and sold pies but switched to vegetables when it began to “affect her waistline.”

Family business

All six of the Westrum’s children have helped at The Market at one point or another as they grew up. Visit The Market today and you’ll likely find their grandchildren offering a helping hand. The profit from The Market has allowed them to send their children through college and also brought them closer together as a family. Cindy said that The Market “taught her kids how to deal with people and they saw how hard it can be to make money which led to them having good work ethics.”

Every Saturday the Westrums leave their farm at 3 a.m. to be at The Market. In July, they will have sweet corn, tomatoes, green beans, beets, onions, zucchini and eggs for sale. In addition, they also sell finger puppets.
