Looking for something to do? You don’t have to look far in Downtown Des Moines (DSM). You can find markets and festivals in all shapes and sizes throughout the calendar year. Join 20,000 of your closest friends at the Downtown Farmers’ Market each Saturday during the summer and on select dates throughout winter. Or embrace your love of literature at Wonder of Words Festival! Then sample the cuisine and the culture at the World Food & Music Festival, located in DSM’s Western Gateway.
The Historic East Village is home to events like the Des Moines Pride Festival, the Hip Hop Festival, the East Village BASH and the Holiday Promenade. Historic Court Avenue District hosts the Des Moines Farmers' Market and Oktoberfest. The Iowa Events Center is also home to several large Downtown DSM festivals, including AQS Quiltweek, the Blue Ribbon Bacon Festival, and the Iowa Yoga Festival. When it comes to outdoor festivals, Western Gateway Park welcomes more than a few. Popular events include 80/35 Music Festival, the Des Moines Arts Festival®, the Italian American Heritage Festival (Viva L'Italia), the Latino Heritage Festival, the Wonder of Words Festival and the World Food & Music Festival.
The Des Moines Arts Festival® is Iowa’s largest and most prestigious arts and cultural event drawing more than 200,000 people annually to Downtown DSM. For many years, this free three-day festival has provided a celebration of the arts and been crowned by its peers as one of the best festivals in the world, including as the three-time award winner of the International Festival and Events Association Grand Gold Pinnacle Award.
