Here in Downtown Des Moines (DSM), sports are always in season. Fans love to watch talented professional athletes and passionately cheer for the local teams. So much so that DSM was recently named the #1 Minor League Sports Market in the country by the Sports Business Journal!
From world-class hockey at Wells Fargo Arena to home runs at Principal Park, Downtown DSM has it all. Whether that is the Iowa Cubs, the Iowa Wild, the Iowa Wolves or the Barnstormers, put on your team's colors and watch your favorite athletes play in Downtown DSM.
At the collegiate level, Downtown DSM has been home to the NCAA Wrestling and Men's Basketball tournaments. Prestigious basketball programs like the University of Kentucky, University of Connecticut and Indiana University have battled on the hardwood of Wells Fargo Arena for March Madness, and the tournament is scheduled to return again in 2019.
Sports entertainers like WWE and the Harlem Globetrotters have also played at Wells Fargo Arena. Monster Jam makes its way to the arena often, bringing the popular truck racing to the region for legions of fans.
Running events such as the Dam to DSM, IMT Des Moines Marathon, Race for the Cure® and Grand Blue Mile, as well as holiday fun runs like the Leprechaun Chase, the Red Flannel Run and the Halloween Hot Chocolate Race will keep you moving all year long. Beloved events like The Color RunTM and Foam Glow 5KTM are for runners of all ages and speeds. Check websites for dates as locations change each year.
If you’re looking for something with a little more excitement than a typical walk/run, perhaps the DSM Zombie Walk, presented by Zombie Burger + Drink Lab, is for you. Zombie makeup artists, escape scenarios and more are featured, while the event helps raise money for the Central Iowa Shelter & Service.
Youth Tournaments & Sports Opportunities
Each year thousands of competitors and fans from around the State of Iowa fill Downtown DSM and Wells Fargo Arena as their teams compete in everything from wrestling and cheerleading to basketball and volleyball.
The YMCA of Greater Des Moines brings volunteer coaches and student athletes to its Downtown DSM location for flag football and youth basketball games. Swim lessons and lifeguard certification courses are also available.
Along with YMCA of Greater Des Moines, Downtown DSM is home to an array of workout facilities and classes. Kosama and Power Life Yoga, both located on Ingersoll Avenue, provide group fitness options nearby Downtown.
The Des Moines Social Club offers acrobatic stretching through the Iowa Circus Academy, belly dancing, tae kwon-do, adult ballet, breakdancing for kids and more.
