Residents of Downtown Des Moines (DSM) have several places to shop for food, supplies and more. From vendors at local events to locally-produced items and well-known products at regional and national chains, Downtown DSM has many grocery shopping options.
Downtown Farmers’ Market
DSM's Downtown Farmers’ Market is one of Downtown DSM’s oldest and most treasured traditions. Specialty items are available for purchase every Saturday May-October at the Des Moines Farmers’ Market in Historic Court District, with holiday items sold at the two-day Winter Markets in November and December at Kaleidoscope at the Hub and Capital Square, also located in Downtown DSM. The Market supports nearly 300 entrepreneurial vendors from 50 Iowa counties and offers diverse products, including locally grown produce, seasonal flowers, farm fresh eggs and cheese, locally produced wine and fresh baked goods. Shop Iowa-raised meat, including beef, pork, chicken, goat, rabbit, lamb and tilapia. Spanning nine city blocks, The Market experience also includes ready-to-eat foods, local artists, live music and entertainment, special programming and learning opportunities.
A longtime staple for Downtown DSM residents, Gateway Market prides itself on creating a memorable food experience. Browse an abundant selection of the finest natural, organic and specialty foods sourced both locally and from around the world. Or stop in at the café and enjoy a hot meal freshly prepared just for you. The welcoming, customer-centered environment encourages culinary exploration.
Fourth + Court Hy-Vee
Located centrally on Fourth Street and Court Avenue, the Fourth + Court Hy-Vee offers everything you could ask for in a grocery store and more. Featuring aisles of fresh produce, organic treats, dine-in options and more, Fourth + Court Hy-Vee is Downtown DSM’s newest grocery option. Hy-Vee’s recent addition to the Downtown DSM scene is happy to serve Downtown residents and workers as they go about their days.
Visitors and residents of Downtown DSM also enjoy shopping at the Walgreens on Walnut Street, which provides a pharmacy, grocery, photo shop and more. The New Oriental Food Store in the Historic East Village offers groceries from a world away. And while you’re in the neighborhood, pop into the East Village Pantry or take a trip to Graziano Brothers Italian Grocery for fresh Italian food.
