It's a Sweet Time of Year to Visit the Downtown Farmers' Market

Peaches at the DTFM

August is a sweet month to be at the Downtown Farmers’ Market. Watermelon, cantaloupe and peaches are now in season.

Watermelon

Watermelons can be found from several vendors including Crooked Creek and Hassevort Farms. Prices vary from $5–10 depending on the size and variety. Some of the varieties you may find are Fascination, Melody and Blacktail Mountain. Make a quick side salad by adding feta cheese, basil and balsamic vinegar to cut up watermelon.

Cantaloupe

It’s also a great time to buy cantaloupe. Westrum Produce and Crooked Creek will have them available for purchase. Expect to pay $3–5. Wrap slices of cantaloupe in prosciutto for a sweet and savory snack.

Peaches

Thill’s Produce and Iowa Orchard are two of the vendors where you can find peaches. They cost around $5 per box. You can cut the peaches in half and grill them. Mix some vanilla and mascarpone cheese together then put a dollop on each peach.
