When people think of Iowa, images of rolling fields, strong communities and a proud agricultural heritage often come to mind. But there is another story taking shape here, one of innovation, collaboration and bold ideas that are reshaping industries and strengthening communities. From safer roads to efficient farms, and from startup accelerators to new healthcare technologies, Iowa is proving that groundbreaking solutions can grow right here in the heartland.

Driving the Future of Transportation Safety

At the Driving Safety Research Institute, researchers are answering critical questions about driving safety. Inside the National Advanced Driving Simulator, one of the most sophisticated facilities in the world, scientists recreate real-world driving conditions to study everything from distracted driving to the future of automated vehicles. This research is not only advancing technology but also saving lives by making transportation safer for everyone.

Smart Farms and Next-Generation Agriculture

A few hours away, the Digital Ag Innovation Lab at Iowa State University is transforming agriculture for the 21st century. Farmers, engineers and data scientists are working side by side to design the next generation of tools: smart sensors, precision agriculture systems and advanced machinery electronics. These innovations help farmers adapt to unpredictable weather, boost efficiency and protect natural resources. Just as importantly, the lab works closely with industry partners so that ideas move quickly from research into the hands of farmers, ensuring Iowa’s leadership in agriculture continues.

Healthcare Innovation Rooted in Community Needs

At UnityPoint Health Cedar Rapids, a new maker space called Generate gives doctors and patients direct access to advanced technologies, empowering them to actively shape innovation and improve care outcomes. This approach ensures that solutions are practical, patient-centered and capable of transforming how care is delivered.

Supporting Innovation Through Collaboration and Venture Funding

Innovation in Iowa is rooted in strong community and industry expertise. In Greater Des Moines (DSM), the Global Insurance Accelerator draws on the state’s strength as a financial hub, pairing early-stage Insurtech startups with leaders in the insurance industry. Startups receive mentorship, testing opportunities in real-world markets and investor exposure that sharpen their products and expand their reach. This strengthens both the local economy and Iowa’s position as a center for insurance innovation. Meanwhile, the Okoboji Entrepreneur Institute brings together 32 students from five Iowa universities each year to collaborate on entrepreneurial projects. This program builds cross-disciplinary skills, encourages creativity and ensures the next generation of innovators is prepared to carry the state’s startup ecosystem forward.

At the state level, policy is working to promote innovation. A newly overhauled tax credit law channels resources into startups, research and development and rural economic growth. The tax law helps simplify and focus innovation credits to high-potential startups and spur venture capital investment. This state commitment to entrepreneurship and commercialization of research stands to benefit both urban and rural regions.

Iowa Has Big Ideas Growing in the Heartland

These stories highlight just a few of the ways innovation is thriving in Iowa. Across the state, entrepreneurs are actively launching start-up ventures, researchers are advancing medical devices and therapies, manufacturers are adopting Industry 4.0 technologies and communities are leading in renewable energy adoption.

What ties it all together is Iowa’s culture of collaboration. Universities, businesses, trade groups and communities do not just work side by side, they work together. This spirit of partnership creates an environment where ideas grow faster, companies scale smarter, and careers are built on meaningful impact. For companies looking for a place to expand and for people looking to make a difference, Iowa offers something rare: the opportunity to be part of big ideas in a place that still feels like home.
