New Mural Transforms Women Of Achievement Bridge
GREATER DES MOINES, IA (June 29, 2023) – A new mural celebrating the spirit of diversity, inclusivity and connection in Greater Des Moines (DSM) has been installed near the Women of Achievement Bridge in Downtown DSM. The mural is located underneath the bridge’s overpass on the bicycle trail on the east side of the Des Moines River.
Local artist Ally Frame designed and installed the piece. The design features children of diverse backgrounds holding hands to demonstrate that the world is connected. Woven into the design are Protea flowers to symbolize diversity, a crane to symbolize that we must strive for a balance to live in peace with one another, a tiger to represent the strength of the community in working together, a dove to symbolize peace, a sea turtle to symbolize peace and patient strength, and butterflies to symbolize hope.
This project is managed by Operation Downtown and the Greater Des Moines Partnership, with assistance from Liz Lidgett Gallery + Design. The selection committee included representatives from the City of Des Moines, the Greater Des Moines Public Art Foundation, Women Lead Change and Operation Downtown.
“This mural is a celebration of many of the elements that make our community strong,” said Jerrica Marshall, Downtown Placemaking Manager at the Greater Des Moines Partnership. “This is a great example of how public art can transform a space into a surprise-and-delight location that is inviting to all.”
