Some Traditions Can Still Happen in 2020

Family Skating in DSM

December 2, 2020

It’s no secret that 2020 is filled with a lot of “not this year.” Recently at the dinner table, my family and I pivoted from lamenting all the fun holiday events we will miss because of COVID-19 and instead made a new list filled with traditions we can still enjoy safely. Cookie baking, gingerbread house decorating and festive movie nights can happen easily for our quaran-team at home, but a resounding cheer went up from the table when we realized we can get out of the house and ice skate at Brenton Skating Plaza this year. Typically, the tree lighting and Santa’s rounds on the Zamboni kick off our holiday season at Brenton, both of which unfortunately fall into that aforementioned “not this year” category, but we can still grab a steamy cup of cocoa, lace up our skates and reserve some time being together outdoors. The open-air skating rink is located on the Principal Riverwalk and offers great views of the lights and decorations in Downtown Des Moines (DSM). Now, the Brenton Skating Plaza website offers an online reservation system so my family of five can safely schedule 90 minutes of skate time overlooking the Des Moines River.

My family likes to stay active, which can be tough in Iowa during the winter, but being able to bundle up and take a few laps on the ice immediately puts a smile on all our faces. Skating is an activity that feels special because it isn’t something we get to do every day, but because of the online reservation system, it’s something we’ve done a few times already since it’s easy to schedule 90 minutes of break time after virtual school is through. The skating rink will have a shortened season this year, but there’s still plenty of time to bundle up, hit the ice and let the fresh air put a little pink in your cheeks. I guarantee you’ll also find a smile on your face when your session is finished.

Downtown Des Moines (DSM) is a growing, vibrant community that offers the energy, sophistication, housing and attractions of a burgeoning city with a brilliant future. It’s also easy to visit with plentiful and affordable street and ramp parking options.
