On the Ice at Brenton Skating Plaza

On the Ice at Brenton Skating Plaza

January 31, 2019

I’m not a pro ice skater. I’ve never taken lessons or learned any cool jumps, spins or other ice-skating tricks. But when I lace up my skates and step out on the ice at Brenton Skating Plaza, I know that for an hour or two, it’s just me and the ice. I can let go of that cooped-up feeling that so often accompanies the winter months in the Midwest, clear my mind and just go.

February makes for an opportune time to enjoy Brenton Skating Plaza in Downtown Des Moines (DSM). Open Sunday through Monday, the rink offers open skate times, skate clinics and special events.

Open Skate

Open skate is offered seven days a week, weather permitting. Hours are as follows:

  • Monday through Thursday  |  Noon – 9 p.m.
  • Friday & Saturday  |  Noon – 11 p.m.
  • Sunday  |  Noon – 6 p.m.

Admission for adults is $8.50. For children 6 – 12 years old, military and seniors aged 62+, admission is $5.25. Skate rental is $4.75.

Skate Clinics

Skate clinics are taught by ice skating instructor Darlene Lewis. Darlene has more than 20 years of experience, with four years in competitive skating and 16 in coaching. Clinics are free thanks to the generosity of Principal. All skill levels ages 4 and up are welcome.

Ice Skating Sessions

All sessions take place from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Our next session is on Saturday, Feb. 9.

To register, fill out the online registration form.
