5 Can’t-Miss Things to Do in Downtown DSM: March 27 – April 2

Iowa Wild players on the ice rink

Downtown Des Moines (DSM) is closing out March and kicking off April with a lineup that’s anything but ordinary. This week brings a mix of big events, nostalgic throwbacks and a few experiences you won’t find just anywhere. You can dive into a massive collector convention, catch a classic film brought to life with a full symphony or step into a cosmic-themed night out that’s part dance party, part science adventure. Families can get in on the fun, too, with a hockey game built just for kids, while curious explorers can uncover a different side of the city through a self-guided audio tour.

However you’re looking to spend your week, Downtown DSM has something worth adding to your calendar. Here are five can’t-miss events happening March 27 – April 2.

Mixology Night: Planetary Prom

Friday, March 27, 2026 | Science Center of Iowa
Prom… but make it cosmic. The Science Center’s 21+ Mixology Night is going full intergalactic with Planetary Prom, and yes, dressing the part is highly encouraged. Think dancing under the stars (literally), space-themed exhibits, a DJ spinning everything from throwbacks to futuristic beats and cocktails that fit the vibe. There’s even a chance to strut your stuff in a cosmic fashion show or snap pics in a space-inspired photo booth. Want to level it up? Add on the Pink Floyd dome show for a trippy, immersive experience. It’s equal parts science, nightlife and just plain fun.

The Wizard of Oz in Concert with the Des Moines Symphony

Saturday, March 28, 2026 | Des Moines Civic Center
If you’ve ever wanted to experience The Wizard of Oz in a whole new way, this is it. Watch the beloved film on the big screen while the Des Moines Symphony performs the score live alongside it. Hearing Judy Garland’s original vocals paired with a full orchestra adds a whole new layer of magic to an already iconic story. It’s nostalgic, a little emotional and honestly just really cool to see (and hear) in person. Whether you grew up with the movie or are introducing it to someone new, this is one of those experiences that feels special from start to finish.

Hockey, giveaways and a full-on birthday bash? Sounds like a win. Iowa Wild Kids Day is all about making game day extra fun for families, with Crash’s Birthday Bash taking center stage. The first 1,500 kids will score a youth jersey, and there’s even a postgame skate so you can hit the ice yourself after the final buzzer. Add in Faith and Family Night and a packed arena atmosphere, and you’ve got a high-energy afternoon that keeps kids (and adults) entertained the whole time. If you’ve been looking for a fun family outing, this one checks all the boxes.
