Iowa Republican legislators and Iowa Democratic legislators faced off in the 4th Annual Iowa Legislative Slow-Pitch Softball Game that took place following the conclusion of the Iowa Cubs game. Hosted by the Greater Des Moines Partnership and Dentons Davis Brown Law Firm, the event proceeds benefited the Iowa Food Bank Association and Blue Star Mothers of Iowa and raised $41,000.

  • Blue Star Mothers of Iowa – A 501(c)(3) nonprofit made up of mothers, stepmothers, grandmothers, foster mothers, and female legal guardians of military members, veterans, and those serving in the guard or reserves. They provide support to service members and their families.
  • Iowa Food Bank Association (IFBA) – Supports Feeding America food banks and their affiliates in Iowa, working to ensure every Iowan has access to sufficient food. Representative Austin Baeth (D), Representative Steve Holt and Representative Hans Wilz (R) emceed the event, illustrating the relationship-building present during the event. These legislators promoted the spirit of bipartisanship while providing entertainment through fun and engaging commentary between players and attendees.

Efforts toward civility and bipartisanship extended to the planning and coordination of the game, led by legislators and lobbyists from across the aisle. I had the privilege of serving on the team along with Senator Kara Warme (R – Story), Senator Izaah Knox (D – Polk), Representative Heather Hora (R – Washington), Representative Daniel Gosa (D – Scott) and the team from Dentons Davis Brown Law Firm, including Logan Murray and Stephanie Kiel.
