4 Things to Do this Fourth of July in Downtown DSM

4 Tips for the Fourth of July DSM

July 2, 2018

Celebrate the 242nd anniversary of the Declaration of Independence in Downtown Des Moines (DSM). Just 88,388 days ago, the Founding Fathers got the U.S. started. Celebrate by getting your red, white and blue on with one of these four things to do in Downtown DSM.

1. Get a history lesson

Get some education on how Independence Day came to be told through one of the Founding Fathers in the Broadway hit, Hamilton. The award-winning musical is showing in Downtown DSM for three weeks at the Des Moines Civic Center. Follow the story of Alexander Hamilton’s rise from his immigrant roots to leaving his mark in U.S. politics through two hours and 45 minutes of award winning hip-hop and choreography. Hamilton runs through July 15. Check out how you can score tickets for $10 through a digital lottery.

2. Hit your holiday celebrations out the park

Start your Fourth of July celebration with a bang — the Iowa Cubs hosts the Memphis Redbirds. Games on July 2 and 3 will feature fireworks shows after the game. New U.S. citizens will be sworn in during a pre-game on-field ceremony July 3.

3. Red, white and view

Enjoy Fourth of July fireworks in surround sound with panoramic views of the various displays from one of Downtown DSM’s many vibrant rooftop establishments. The Rooftop Bar in the Historic East Village is hosting dueling pianos from 7 p.m., or enjoy live music on the patio at the Republic on Grand — the upscale location atop the AC Hotel by Marriott. In Gray’s Lake Area, 300 Craft & Rooftop is partnering with Surly Brewing Company to give out free swag along with $4 Surly tallboys. DJs will be playing through the evening.

4. Keep the party going
