Description
Des Moines artist Sonia Ashe presents Good Trouble, a mixed media exhibition honoring activists — past and present — who have challenged injustice and inspired change. The show opens on Thursday, Nov. 6, 2025, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church (600 6th Ave. in Des Moines).
Through vibrant mixed media portraits created with collaged tissue paper and acrylic paint, Ashe captures the humanity of activists who have shaped movements across civil rights, feminism, environmental justice, indigenous sovereignty, gender liberation and beyond. Subjects include Alicia Garza, Dolores Huerta, Malala Yousafzai, Greta Thunberg, Angela Davis, Gloria Steinem, Alok Vaid Menon and others whose voices continue to resonate globally.
The exhibition’s title pays tribute to the late Congressman John Lewis, who famously urged, “Never, ever be afraid to make some noise and get in good trouble, necessary trouble.” Each portrait in Good Trouble not only commemorates its subject but also calls viewers to reflect on how they, too, might contribute to ongoing struggles for justice.
