Iowa PBS Presents Telling Our Own Story, Four Films Produced by Black Iowa Filmmakers

Telling Our Own Story

On Monday, June 6 and Tuesday, June 7, Iowa PBS presents Telling Our Own Story, four films from Black Iowan filmmakers on Black culture and what life is like for Black Iowans. Insights will touch on racism and discrimination, generational wealth, contributions of Black Iowans and the history of Black culture since Iowa became a state.

An advance online preview will be hosted on Thursday, June 2 at 7 p.m. where clips from Telling Our Own Story will be shown and a conversation with the filmmakers will be held after the preview airs. To register for this free event, visit iowapbs.org/events.

Monday, June 6

Racism and Its Impact (8 p.m.)

This project explores the basis for how racism took hold in Iowa and why it persists.

Poverty and the Wealth Gap (8:30 p.m.)

This project explores the journey of Black Iowans navigating the nuances of generational wealth.

Tuesday, June 7

Black History (8 p.m)

Professor Venise Berry and filmmaker S. Torriano Berry spotlight Black Iowans who have made their mark on the state and world.

Ending Racism (8:30 p.m.)

Journalist Ty Rushing explores racism and discrimination across rural and urban landscapes in Iowa.
