First Fridays in the East Village

Friday, Aug. 1, 2025 | Historic East Village 

If you're looking for a reason to get out this Friday, First Fridays in the Historic East Village delivers. From 5-8 p.m., this eclectic neighborhood lights up with shopping deals, live music, drink specials and pop-up fun around every corner. Think happy hour at Flora, whiskey game night at Fontenelle, a local author meet and greet at Storyhouse Bookpub and 2-for-1 seasonal cocktails at Nightingale Cocktail. Whether you’re grabbing a drink, picking up local art or just people-watching with friends, this night has that perfect mix of chill and festive. Your Friday plans = officially sorted. 

Buena Vista Orchestra 

Saturday, Aug. 2, 2025 | Hoyt Sherman Place 

Get swept away by the rhythms and melodies of Cuba with the Buena Vista Orchestra, led by legendary trombonist Jesús "Aguaje" Ramos. Featuring key players from the iconic Buena Vista Social Club, this performance pays tribute to the music that stole hearts worldwide through its infectious beats and unforgettable history. Iowa State Fair Parade 

Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2025 | Downtown Des Moines 

Kick off fair season with the beloved Iowa State Fair Parade, a Downtown DSM tradition that draws thousands each year. It’s free, it’s festive and it’s got everything from vibrant music and tractors to floats, mascots and more. Stake out a spot along Grand Avenue (the route runs from the Capitol to 15th Street), bring your crew and your lawn chairs and enjoy more than 200 entries of pure Iowa pride rolling by. Whether you’re a parade regular or bringing the kids for the first time, this event always brings the small-town charm to the Downtown DSM streets. 

Music in the Garden Summer Concert Series 

Thursday, Aug. 7 | Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden 

If summer had a soundtrack, it would sound a lot like this. The final week of Music in the Garden wraps up with feel-good tunes from Diplomats of Solid Sound at one of Downtown DSM's most scenic spots. Picture this: wood-fired pizza in one hand, a cold drink in the other and live music under a canopy of blooms. Bring a blanket or chair, kick back in the Koehn Garden and enjoy the perfect outdoor vibe. Doors open at 6 p.m., music starts at 6:30 p.m., and advance tickets or season passes are available if you want to skip the line. 

Iowa Brewers’ Union – Jimmy Carter Happy Hour 

Thursday, Aug. 7, 2025 | El Bait Shop 

Sample some of the best homebrews in the state at this laid-back monthly hang at el Bait Shop. Every first Thursday, members of the Iowa Brewers Union roll in with coolers full of experimental, creative and downright delicious beers for the public to sample. From 6-8 p.m., it's an all-you-can-sip beer adventure — no cover, no pressure, just a fun way to explore what Iowa’s homebrewing scene has to offer. Whether you’re a seasoned beer nerd or new to the craft, this is a great place to sip, learn and connect with fellow brew lovers.
