ASLA Awards and Design Recognition
Five projects are recognized for design excellence by the Iowa Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) including: Forest Grove Park in Bettendorf, Iowa an Award of Excellence; Capitol Avenue Streetscape in Springfield, Illinois a Merit Award; Central Moore Park in Moore, Oklahoma and Hanawalt Elementary in Des Moines, Iowa each receiving a Merit Award; and Federal Avenue Streetscape in Mason City, Iowa an Honor Award.
Planning
Forest Grove Park Master Plan — receives an award of excellence in the design unbuilt category for the process and development plans of a 105-acre Park designed to meet recreation needs of the Forest Grove community and provide restored ecological zones within the Park for passive recreation, interpretation, and educational opportunities. Balancing community cultural needs of the Park with environmental conditions and adjacent development and economic factors is a major priority.

The Central Moore Park Master Plan, recognized as a Merit award winner, is a long-range master plan for a 55-acre park located within the urban core of the City of Moore. Developed to meet program expectations established by citizens include a community recreation center, outdoor aquatic center, amphitheater, farmers market, trails, and associated park amenities and utility infrastructure as part of the initial implementation phase.
Community Stewardship
Hanawalt Elementary School — Des Moines, Iowa is recognized with a Community Service Merit Award, for partnering and collaborating to provide Healthy Choices as a first choice. A team of volunteers, comprised of designers, school staff, PTA Members and the community at large, worked together to construct a track, improve the lawn (field), and upgrade the active courts as a first step. All three of these improvements are focused on getting kids and the community active.
Design
Capitol Avenue Streetscape in Springfield, Illinois, is a recipient of a Merit Design Award. This streetscape project re-imagines the most significant civic corridor in Springfield as a place where the stories of Illinois are told through a clean and simple ceremonial streetscape layered with integrated art that conveys the City and State's compelling history and culture. Capitol Avenue is the avenue for state and local ceremony, parades and events.
Project Information
Federal Avenue Streetscape in Mason City, Iowa is recognized with an Honor Award. The City of Mason City has transformed four blocks along Federal Avenue and a plaza at the core of this downtown. This transformation is place specific and targeted to reestablish the downtown as the place for tourists and residents alike to congregate and celebrate. The streetscape and plaza are designed to help Downtown Mason City remain a living heart of the community - a strong economic resource and image center that brings economic benefit and joy to all who have a stake and interest in the future of the city.
