DSM Intern Connection Program Preparing the Next Generation of Talent

DSM Intern Connection

August 13, 2025

This year, participants in the Greater Des Moines Partnership’s DSM Intern Connection program attended a variety of free professional development and social opportunities in Greater Des Moines (DSM). These events offered interns from more than 65 colleges and universities across the country the chance to connect with one another while engaging with local businesses and regional leaders.

Program sessions covered topics such as how to get involved in DSM, effective networking strategies, launching a successful career, navigating workplace conflict and gaining insights from young professionals and top business leaders. Interns who attended three or more events earned a Community Leadership Certificate from The Partnership, a credential that has become a valuable differentiator for these job applicants.

DSM Intern Connection Program Success

The five DSM Intern Connection events were successful in helping immerse interns in career exploration and development experiences. According to a DSM Intern Connection follow-up survey, after attending these events, more than 80% of participants would be likely or very likely to relocate to Greater DSM if they received a job offer. This number is higher than the national average for intern conversion.

“I’d love to move here after graduation, regardless of whether my company offers me a full time opportunity," said one intern.

The 2025 DSM Intern Connection program had 103 employers and 65 colleges/universities represented with at least one intern participating in the program. At the conclusion of the program, 70% of attendees would recommend the program to their peers and nearly 90% would accept positions from their internship employer if offered a job.

Another intern said, “I enjoyed how many different activities were available. I was able to make friends with diverse sets of interests, which allowed me to always have someone to do something with me.”

"I loved having this program! It’s unique and was one of the best parts of my summer intern experience," another added.

The number one place where students learned about the program was through their internship employer. DSM Intern Connection provides the employer with value-added professional development and networking opportunities specifically designed for college interns. We encourage all local employers to urge their interns to take part in the program.
