Designing For People. By People. One Internship at a Time.

CMBA Architects

July 31, 2025

Last spring, I wrapped up my third year in Iowa State University’s architectural program. Each year since starting the program, I’ve made a point to visit CMBA Architects’ booth at the annual College of Design career fair. What drew me back year after year was the firm’s commitment to people-centric design, creating buildings that truly serve the people who use them. That commitment is what inspired me to apply to intern with the firm and what’s made my internship experience so invaluable.

Why People-Centered Design Matters

At its core, architecture is about people. As an architectural intern at CMBA Architects, I've learned how thoughtful design can shape the way people feel, move and connect within a space. But CMBA Architects doesn’t just focus on creating innovative, client-centered environments. They also cultivate a collaborative, supportive workplace where interns are encouraged to build meaningful relationships and grow both personally and professionally – an opportunity I’ve been lucky enough to experience.

Inside the Internship Experience

No two days of my experience have looked the same. I’ve had the opportunity to work alongside the CMBA team on real-world projects, drafting pre-bond visual materials such as renderings and diagrams for future schools, shadowing on-site at projects in construction, learning the ins and outs of contract writing and more. I’ve also taken part in CMBA University, a unique program where team members from across the firm meet with interns to share insights into their specific areas of expertise. We even met directly with CMBA’s CEO, Brian Crichton, for a session of CMBA University. Not many interns can say they’ve had face time with their company’s CEO.

Beyond the Blueprint

Through these experiences, I’m learning how to think like an architect. A classroom can only teach so much; hands-on learning is crucial to understanding the ins and outs of a profession as unique as architecture. One highlight of this experience has been working collaboratively with my fellow interns on a joint project to design a library in Nebraska. As a team, we've been working together to develop an all-encompassing design concept, including the layout, appearance and each intricate detail of the library. CMBA allows creativity to run free, where each intern feels empowered to bring their ideas to the table right alongside the firm's professionals.

CMBA fosters a welcoming environment where young professionals are truly given a seat at the table. The internship program encourages young professionals to collaborate on real-world projects, gaining valuable hands-on experience and building essential skills along the way. Just as every design at CMBA is centered around the people it serves, the office culture reflects that same mindset, where everyone is treated with respect and authenticity. The firm’s strong, people-first values are woven into every level of the organization, reaching all the way to its interns.

As I continue my time with CMBA Architects, I’m excited to see the projects I’ve contributed to, like the library in Nebraska, begin to take shape. Looking ahead, I’ll carry with me both CMBA’s people-centered design approach and the collaborative, supportive culture that defines the firm as I grow in my professional career.
