Katherine Harrington is the President & CEO of the West Des Moines Chamber of Commerce (WDM Chamber), where she leads initiatives to support business growth, foster community connections and elevate the West Des Moines region. Under her leadership, the WDM Chamber has expanded its programs, events and membership, driving economic development and championing local businesses. With a background in marketing, leadership and community engagement, Katherine is dedicated to creating opportunities that make West Des Moines a thriving place to live, work and play.

The WDM Chamber has over 950 Members and is working toward a goal of 1,000+. In 2024, the WDM Chamber marked its 100th anniversary, recognizing a century of business growth and community development. Its full-time team of seven includes Tricia Even, Events & Experiences Coordinator; Jared Galligan, Account Executive; Katherine Harrington, President & CEO; Kara Matheson, Vice President of Workforce Development & Culture; Everett Mullican, Marketing & Communications Manager; Meredith Murphy, Director of Future Workforce; and Lauren Watson, Account Executive. This team leads programs, events and initiatives that connect businesses, strengthen the workforce and support economic growth in West Des Moines and the region.

What is a Signature Offering/Exciting upcoming Event of Your Chamber that you’d like to highlight?
The WDM Chamber powers and hosts several signature events each year that bring together business, community and regional leaders. These include the Annual Dinner, a premier celebration recognizing Citizen and Emerging Citizen of the Year; the Athene Beyond Boundaries Business Summit, which features nationally recognized speakers, networking and a pitch competition awarding thousands in prizes each year; the Mentoring for Women Conference, a statewide gathering for leadership development and mentorship; and the Best of the West Awards, a community-voted program honoring excellence across 100 categories. The Chamber also leads other impactful events such as the First Responders Appreciation Breakfast, West Metro Golf Par-Tee, Breakfast B4 Business, Rush Hour networking, monthly luncheons and more — all featured on the Chamber’s website and events calendar.

What Partnership Tools/Resources Have Been Most Beneficial to Your Chamber Members?
The WDM Chamber provides Members with a variety of tools and resources to grow their businesses, expand connections and increase visibility. Benefits include promotional opportunities such as ribbon cuttings, business spotlights, social media and e-newsletter features, participation in initiatives like Small Business Saturday, enhanced directory listings and event discounts. Members also gain access to small business resources and targeted support for all business owners. Through automatic membership in the Greater Des Moines Partnership, members receive region-wide exposure, networking opportunities, hiring tools and marketing support. Additional programs like YURtern, the High School Leadership Academy, West Des Moines Leadership Academy, Ambassador Program, West YP and the Latino Trade Network further strengthen workplace culture, foster collaboration and build lasting professional relationships. Investor-level members also receive exclusive access to high-level networking opportunities and invitation-only events, such as private dinner receptions and other special gatherings. What Events or Benefits Should Members Take Advantage of in the Next Couple of Months?
In the coming months, WDM Chamber Members can take advantage of high-impact events and benefits designed to grow connections, gain insights and strengthen business success. First up is the Mentoring for Women Conference on Friday, Sept. 19, 2025, a premier leadership and mentorship event featuring inspiring speakers and meaningful networking opportunities. On Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2025, the Best of the West Awards will celebrate excellence across 100 community-voted categories. Looking ahead to next spring, the Athene Beyond Boundaries Business Summit will return on Tuesday, April 14 and Wednesday, April 15, 2026, bringing nationally recognized speakers, business development opportunities and a high-energy pitch competition awarding thousands in prizes. Members can also participate in monthly networking events like Breakfast B4 Business, Rush Hour after-hours socials and luncheons featuring timely topics and influential speakers. Investor-level Members have access to exclusive gatherings such as private receptions, and other invitation-only experiences, while all members are encouraged to utilize promotional tools like ribbon cuttings, business spotlights and social media features to boost visibility.

The future of the WDM Chamber community — our Century Ahead — is brighter and bolder than ever. While not all plans are ready to be unveiled, exciting new initiatives are on the horizon to fuel business growth, supercharge startup success and amplify both business and community development in powerful ways. From innovative programs to expanded resources, the months ahead will bring opportunities that elevate every member and strengthen our region’s position as a hub for connection, innovation and prosperity. With more than 950 Members — about 30% of which are located outside of West Des Moines — the WDM Chamber represents businesses from virtually every industry. What is One Piece of Advice You’d Give to a New Business?
One piece of advice for a new business is to get connected early and often. Everett Mullican serves as the Marketing & Communications Manager for the West Des Moines Chamber of Commerce. He is a graduate of Drake University, where he received his bachelor’s degree in public relations and advertising from the School of Journalism and Mass Communication. Everett resides in his hometown of West Des Moines, Iowa.
