Employers in Iowa Willing to Train the Right Candidates

August 18, 2021

Mike Ralston, president of the Iowa Association of Business and Industry (ABI), shared his thoughts on industry needs in Iowa, what hiring looks like today, recovery from the pandemic and diversity in the workforce.

About ABI

Ralston explained how ABI does on a state level what The Partnership does on a local level, helping businesses succeed, providing economic activity for Iowa communities and more. ABI staff adds value where possible for its communities and members. Ralston said every industry ABI works with — from manufacturing and utilities to warehousing and insurance — is looking for people, and they’re willing to train the employees once they come on board.

Hiring in the Future

In manufacturing, Ralston said a decade ago businesses were looking for certain certifications, but now, companies are looking for people to come in and receive training. Businesses will pay you while you get training because employers want to help you develop a career. Within ABI’s membership base, employers are seeking the right mindset from employees, including the following characteristics:

·      Showing up for work each day

·      Showing up on time

·      Willingness to work with others

·      Demonstrating a positive attitude

Pandemic Recovery

Ralston is optimistic about the way Iowa businesses have continued to grow and innovate throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. Iowa’s economy has proven to be resilient in product manufacturing and the services they provide, while continuing to work with employees to split shifts to have a better balance in their lives.

Diversity in the Workforce

Many ABI businesses weren’t necessarily focused on diversity and inclusion in the past, but Ralston said that in recent years, both urban and rural employers have seen its importance and are embracing diversity in the workforce.
