Saturdays, Oct. 4 – 25, 2025 | Historic Court District
October brings new hours for the much-loved Downtown Farmers’ Market! The opening bell will ring at 8 a.m. for the remainder of the season, continuing until Noon each Saturday throughout October. Fall is the perfect time to browse your favorite seasonal items like pumpkins, fresh-picked apples, warm clothing, homey décor and more. Plus, live entertainment like music and performance arts makes this a can’t-miss stop on our list of free things to do in Downtown DSM during October. Free Shadowboxing on the Patio with M BOX Fitness
Every Sunday, Oct. 5 - Oct. 26, 2025 | Big Grove Brewery
Punch up your Sunday mornings with a little movement and a lot of fun at Big Grove! The crew from M BOX Fitness is hosting free shadowboxing sessions on the patio every Sunday from 10-10:45 a.m., through Oct. 26. No gloves, no partners—just air punches, footwork and combinations to get your heart rate up and your confidence soaring. Instructor Emily makes it easy for all skill levels, so whether you’re brand-new or a seasoned fitness junkie, you’ll feel right at home. Bonus: the patio is heated, so even if the fall air is crisp, you’ll stay warm while you box it out.

Turn It On! Mural Festival
Saturday, Oct. 18, 2025 | 901 Grand Ave.
Big art is coming to Downtown DSM — literally. On Saturday, Oct. 18, from 1–3 p.m., celebrate the unveiling of Dutch artist Leon Keer’s brand-new 8,000+ square foot mural at 901 Grand Avenue. Commissioned by the Greater Des Moines Public Art Foundation (GDMPAF) and Principal Financial Group, this massive piece also comes to life with an augmented reality (AR) twist, powered by the free GDMPAF app. The “Turn It On!” festival will mark the official launch of both the mural and the app, kicking off a new initiative to bring AR-compatible murals to all four wards of Des Moines. Enjoy live music from LIGHTCUBE as you take in the creativity, color and community spirit, all for free.

The spirit is contagious! Bring a fun sign and noisemakers to cheer on your favorite athlete.
Don’t know anyone running? No sweat! We promise you’ll have a fun time cheering for all the runners (and you might even recognize a few, too!). With the finish line right on Court Avenue in the Historic Court District, you’ll be swept away with the fun atmosphere as the runners earn their race medal.
