DSM Book Festival: For the Kids

DSM Book Festival For the Kids

February 6, 2019

While we will be adding programming to our DSM Book Festival schedule throughout the rest of January, we’ve already got a great lineup of children’s programming to enjoy throughout the day. If you haven’t seen our previous posts about The Festival, you can get caught up by reading our headlining authors post, as well as our ways to get involved post.

The free DSM Book Festival will be held Saturday, March 30 at Cowles Commons and Capital Square, 400 Locust Street, in Downtown Des Moines (DSM), taking place all day from 10 a.m. until 7 p.m. The event will feature award-winning authors, hands-on activities, poetry slams and singers/songwriters and local vendors.

Here’s what we have in the lineup so far for families bringing young children:

Llama Llama Red Pajama Party

This party is centered around the Llama Llama Red Pajama book by Anna Dewdney. Children are encouraged to wear their red pajamas and join in the Llama Llama fun.  Llama Llama is a household favorite for us! This event will take place from 10 a.m. – Noon.

Dog Man Special Event

Meet Dog Man and take part in activities centered around the popular series by Dav Pilkey. This event will take place from Noon – 2 p.m.

Create Your Own Comic Book

If you know a comic book fan, this is the activity for them! This event is just what it sounds like. Young writers and illustrators can use their creativity to write and design their very own comic book. This event will take place from 2 – 4 p.m.

Peppa Pig Tea Party

Peppa Pig, the rebellious character from the British animated series will host a tea party for little guests from 4 – 5 p.m. in the Kids Zone. A favorite character of the preschool age, parents are encouraged to bring their tots to enjoy tea and more!

Meet Elephant and Piggie

Elephant and Piggie are two of the most recent beloved children’s book characters created by Mo Willems. Meet them in the Kids Zone from 5 – 7 p.m. If you haven’t had an opportunity to read one of these easy-to-read books that will remind you of Dr. Seuss, you really should give it a try.

More activities will continue to be added, including comic book character and storybook character contests, so be sure to check back to see what fun programming for kids makes the DSM Book Festival a must-attend Festival in 2019.

Join us at Capital Square and Cowles Commons at 400 Locust Street for Festival fun! You can take advantage of the free Downtown D-Line Shuttle or a range of parking options.

To find books by the headlining authors, as well as children’s book authors listed above prior to the event, visit the official Festival Book Store Beaverdale Books, 2629 Beaver Avenue in Des Moines. You can also purchase onsite at the event.
