Two Development Programs Help Prepare New Talent at Holmes Murphy

At Holmes Murphy, we’re always looking for ways to innovate and improve everything we do. I’m especially fortunate because my job is heavily involved with setting this standard for some of our most important stakeholders — new and prospective employees. Our entire Growth and Development team works hard to offer in-depth experiences, setting talent on the right path of success within the insurance industry and local business communities. Thus, our onboarding process for new team members is an exciting venture I have had the privilege to be a part of every year.

The Brainery

The Brainery is one such example. It is a unique, paid program for new employees that lasts three months. The Brainery offers connections with thought leaders who have years of knowledge in various parts of the industry. With this, we can offer hands-on training, a lot of social opportunities, and time with executives — all aspects that are becoming increasingly rare in today’s business culture. The program also works to refine skills in professional communication, as well as prepare new employees for obtaining their insurance license.

The three pillars of the Brainery are knowledge, opportunity and connection. These aspects are what makes the program successful and truly helps to enhance the experience. Perhaps the way I can best describe the Brainery to a new talent prospect is focused on accelerating your connections and growth in the insurance industry. The wealth of expertise available and the skills learned during this time are endless.

Connection is the most important takeaway with all our development programs. We are consistently told by participants that the connections made during this time have stuck with them throughout their time at Holmes Murphy and their greater career. Meeting and collaborating with industry leaders who are eager to share their expertise from day one is a game changer and a part of our company culture that we are proud to share. By the time new team members start, they are already acquainted with a community of peers at various levels and who are valuable connections as they continue progressing in their career. DiscoverYou

Another program focused on connection is DiscoverYou. This is a Holmes Murphy program offered to high school students ages 16 and older. DiscoverYou takes place during the summer and helps students gain real-life business experience at Holmes Murphy.

Through DiscoverYou, students are able to learn about different career paths. Examples include marketing, accounting, human resources, IT and sales. Students also make connections with thoughts leaders who are experts within these different paths that can become incredibly important when selecting their next job or internship. They also develop a number of professional skills which undoubtably serve them for whichever career path they choose.

Previously, DiscoverYou was only available in Greater Des Moines (DSM). This year, Holmes Murphy is excited to launch its first DiscoverYou program in Minneapolis, hoping to extend our reach and help even more students prepare for their professional lives. In all that we do, I am grateful for my team as we continue to take the complex world of insurance and the challenges today’s employees face and turn it into approachable learning that is not only a great educational experience, but also a lot of fun!
