Thought Leadership with iJAG
Work-based learning is imperative in helping Iowa businesses build and maintain their talent pipelines. This type of programming provides students with opportunities to develop relationships, gain exposure and gain work experience in various business and industry sectors starting as early as seventh grade which fosters the critical development of employability skills, leadership and human skills needed, along with implementing a solid career pathway upon graduation from high school.
Delivering In-School Programming to Students
iJAG — notoriously known for its work-based learning solutions — has evolved how businesses can reach, connect with and recruit local talent since its inception in 1999. For 25 years, iJAG has partnered with school districts across the state to deliver in-school programming to students that is centered around trauma-informed education, career planning, employability skills, leadership development, civic engagement and community service. Programming emphasizes three key aspects of work-based learning: building relationships, providing industry exposure and offering authentic workplace learning experiences. Together, these aspects help students prepare to enter the workforce by equipping them with the skills and resilience needed to succeed in today’s job market.
One incredible example of iJAG’s success is the partnership with Principal Financial Group (PFG) and Perseverance “Percy” Narcisse, a former student at Roosevelt High School in Des Moines. Percy had dreams of attending Iowa State University. However, her plans were suddenly changed by the unexpected death of her father (who had named her Perseverance because he wanted her to always excel in life) and by becoming a young mother. Determined to continue building her future, she enrolled in iJAG which helped her connect to an internship at PFG. Today, Percy has been employed for five years and works as an EDI Implementation Specialist in the Specialty Benefits Division at PFG. Her story is one of thousands.
To date, iJAG has impacted the lives of more than 35,000 young people across Iowa. To learn more about how you or your organization can invest in the development of Iowa’s future, visit iJAG.org/employers.
