Giving Back to DSM by Focusing on Wellbeing, Youth Opportunities, the Arts + DEI

Holmes Murphy Giving

April 4, 2022

This year, Holmes Murphy celebrates 90 years of doing business in Greater Des Moines (DSM). As we embark upon the month of April, which is representative of National Volunteer month, we are reminded of the rich traditions of giving embedded into the very fabric of Holmes Murphy since our founding in 1932.

Our founders, Max Holmes and Ray Murphy, Jr., were emphatic about giving back to our DSM community and were early advocates for what we would now classify as our Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DE&I) initiatives. As Holmes Murphy has grown to now 13 geographies in 11 states with more than 1,000 employees, we have instilled this values-based philosophy?of giving as a part of our culture.

Giving Through the Holmes Murphy Foundation

The spirit of giving is lived out each day through our employees, and we are proud to support the philanthropic organizations and events that are important to our clients and communities. In fact, several years ago, we made the intentional decision to deploy our Holmes Murphy Foundation.

Through our Foundation, we are specifically focused on four areas of giving:

  • Safety, Health + Wellbeing — We believe everyone deserves to feel safe, be healthy and thrive, and yet, so many don't have access to the resources or interventions needed. We support at-risk, health and wellbeing human services initiatives that address these growing?needs.
  • Youth Opportunities — We believe proper youth development opportunities are at the forefront of our next generation living their best and most productive life. We support initiatives tied to youth development and enrichment in our communities.?Our youth will drive our future.
  • Arts + Culture — We believe arts and culture are paramount in creating healthy and vibrant communities in which we live, work and play. We support arts and culture initiatives that allow access to learning opportunities for our employees and their families.
  • Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion — We focus on embracing differences with intentionality and with a goal to make a difference at work, home and in our communities. We support services designed with authenticity and that will help us sustain a culture where every person is supported to reach their unique and fullest potential.

We maximize our giving and community engagement through our four giving vehicles:

  • Direct Giving
  • Community Footprints Program
  • Volunteer Time Off (VTO)
  • Employee Matching Gift Program

We believe creating an exceptional employee experience geared toward care, dedication and support translates into a phenomenal “pay it forward” experience where our employees are empowered to Care.Fully. and Give.Fully. not just to our communities but also to our clients and the industry. Our purpose statement even reflects this: "Caring for your unique potential is our soul purpose." Our employees, clients and communities are the heartbeat of Holmes Murphy, and their unique potential is our very purpose for our being in business.

At Holmes Murphy, we Give.Fully., and we look forward to celebrating another 90 years of giving in the DSM region and all of our 13 Holmes Murphy geographic communities.
