Flu Shot in 2020

September 25, 2020

The flu isn’t the only virus medical professionals will be up against this flu season. In 2020, the flu and COVID-19 will be circulating simultaneously. Since it’s possible you could get COVID-19 and the flu at the same time, a flu shot is more important in 2020 than ever. While some symptoms overlap, there are some key differences patients should be aware of as flu season ramps up.

Getting the flu vaccine will reduce your risk and help keep your respiratory system strong. Janae Brown, ARNP of UnityPoint Clinic, agrees that getting your flu shot is a good idea, not only to reduce your chances of infection, but in order to lessen the burden on medical facilities as we enter into flu season and continue the fight against COVID-19.

In the video below, Brown discusses a few exceptions when it comes to getting the flu shot, including anyone with Guillain-Barre Syndrome or an egg allergy should discuss the shot with their provider.

When to Get a Flu Shot

Flu shots are available now, and Brown says that while some people choose to wait and get them later in the fall, she recommends getting them now. You can schedule an appointment with your primary care provider, you local UnityPoint Clinic or the Ankeny Medical Park Pharmacy, 3625 N. Ankeny Boulevard, Suite A, to receive one.

If you have questions about getting the flu shot and your primary care provider with with UnityPoint Health, it’s easy to message them via the MyUnityPoint patient portal.

Flu Shots + Children

While many young children can feel apprehensive about shots, Brown says it helps to know your child. Is it better for them to be a bit surprised by it or do they need time to prepare themselves before receiving it? You know your child best and can work with your provider on the best way to deliver the shot.

Getting a flu shot is an easy way to protect yourself and the community. Watch Brown’s interview with Megan Reuther, an anchor with Channel 13 News, where Reuther gets her own flu shot to see just how quick and simple it is!
