DSM USA Continues to Showcase Skateboarding

Skateboarding Events

September 14, 2022

Skate DSM is stoked to announce the 2nd Annual Des Moines Streetstyle Open, a skate contest from Sept. 22 – 24. The Des Moines Streetstyle Open is modeled after what is known as the “best” international skate competition, the Copenhagen Open. This multi-day event, presented by Kum & Go, will start at the Lauridsen Skatepark and then move to different skate spots throughout Greater Des Moines (DSM). The event will feature some of the world’s best skaters, as well as talented skaters from the Midwest and, of course, right here in Des Moines.Shiloh Skateboarding

About the Des Moines Streetstyle Open

Red Bull will take part in the three-day skateboard event in DSM, supporting a number of activities (on and off the skateboard) as part of their Red Bull Mind the Gap Best Trick Contest. Professional Red Bull skaters will be on the ground in the region to participate.Streetstyle Open

The weekend will start with “Welcome to Town” skate contests at the Lauridsen Skatepark. Select skaters will compete in various events including a beginner flow bowl session with product prizes, head-to-head races throughout the skatepark and a best manual trick contest presented by Street Plant Skateboards and judged by Mike Vallely, Des Moines resident and pro skater. An after-party at Maggie’s Rumble Room will immediately follow the event and will feature live music from local bands.

On Friday, the events will move throughout the cities of Des Moines and West Des Moines, with select skaters competing in a best trick contest at the Lauridsen Amphitheater at Water Works Park and a jam session at Legion Skatepark in West Des Moines.

Saturday’s events will start at the Polk County Administrative Building. Pre-selected DSM students will receive a free skateboard, helmet and basic skateboard instruction as part of our “Get on Board” project. The competition will begin in the afternoon with a best trick contest on the 10-stair. Finally, skaters from all over the Midwest will compete against “pro” skaters in the Red Bull “Mind the Gap” best trick contest at the intersection of Cherry and SW 8th Streets in Downtown Des Moines (DSM). Cash prizes will be awarded to the top five finishers, and the top finisher will also receive $500 towards travel to the Mind the Gap event in Atlanta this December. All skaters and spectators are invited to join in the celebration of Subsect Skate Shop’s 25th anniversary at the Beechwood Lounge.Jake Skateboarding

Local vendors and food trucks will be on-site at all evening events to feed spectators and showcase what our great city has to offer. Cash prizes will be awarded at each event throughout the weekend, along with a special prize for the best men and women overall skaters.

Thanks to our sponsors Kum & Go, Red Bull, Holmes Murphy, Catch Des Moines, Hyper Energy Bar, Greater Des Moines Partnership, Iron Heart Tattoo and Bowers Supply, all events are free and open to the public and free to compete. Skaters can register on-site for each event. To learn more, follow us on Instagram, Facebook or go to DesMoinesStreetstyleOpen.com.
