Downtown Businesses Thrive and Public Utilizes Amenities Thanks to Des Moines Loop Squad

For years, scooping the loop in Downtown Des Moines (DSM) — specifically Sixth Avenue to 17th Street along Grand and Locust Avenues — has been a popular pastime. Back before Downtown Des Moines (DSM) became what it is today, with more open businesses and restaurants in the Historic East Village and Western Gateway. This summer a new initiative of seven officers from the Des Moines Police Department, dubbed the Des Moines Loop Squad, formed to benefit local businesses, residents and visitors by changing the behavior surrounding the loop area.

What opportunities for change did the Loop Squad offer?

Sergeant Collin Quinn: We needed to change behavior Downtown in this loop area, for the benefit of the businesses, neighborhood and for the benefit of the folks who want to use the area for its intended purpose.

What positives have you seen since the Loop Squad began?

Sergeant Quinn: The first weekend was extremely busy. The first Friday was kind of controlled chaos for a little bit, but we were able to make an impact. We want people to use the amenities that we have in Downtown DSM for their intended purposes.

Have you had positive interactions with anybody Downtown while patrolling?

Sergeant Quinn: We've had multiple interactions with folks that live and work in Downtown DSM, and they're more than appreciative. We've had folks offer us free food, to stop in for free drinks when you get thirsty, and we had neighbors come up to us and offer us hugs because they're just so happy that we were doing something with the noise-related issues in the area. The Loop Squad has definitely had a positive impact.

What should people know about the Loop Squad presence?

Sergeant Quinn: We're bringing some peace back to the local businesses and folks that live in our Downtown neighborhoods. We want people to be able to enjoy their time in Downtown DSM.
