Black History Month Scavenger Hunts for Kids
Now – Saturday, Feb. 25 | Central Library
Explore Black authors and influential figures in Black history with several topical scavenger hunts planned in February as part of Black History Month. The scavenger hunts are family friendly and take place in the Des Moines Public Library’s Central Library within the children’s area.

Ice Skating in Downtown DSM
Open Daily in February, Weather-Permitting | Brenton Skating Plaza
Check out all the unique programming this week at the outdoor ice skating rink, Brenton Skating Plaza, in Downtown DSM:
- Thursday, Feb. 2: Homeschool Skate takes place from 1:30 – 3:30 p.m.
- Thursday, Feb. 2: The Adaptive Skate event from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. is ideal for individuals with a range of physical or development abilities to ice skate without a large crowd
- Saturday, Feb. 4: Superhero and Princess Skate is perfect for kids and families, taking place 9 – 11 a.m.
- Saturday, Feb. 4 – Sunday, Feb. 5: Military Appreciation Skate includes free admission for Veterans and Active Duty Servicemembers as well as three family members
- Wednesday, Feb. 8: Senior Skate happens each Wednesday from 2 – 3:45 p.m. for skaters ages 60 and older

Saturday, Feb. 4 | Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden
Spend your Saturday morning practicing this ancient form of Chinese exercise in the peaceful indoor Botanical Garden. Tai Chi helps with stress relief while promoting strength, flexibility, range of motion and balance. The cost is $12 for members and $15 for non-members.

Six the Musical: Willis Broadway Series
Tuesday, Feb. 7 – Sunday, Feb. 19 | Des Moines Civic Center
See what all the buzz is about! The story highlights the six wives of Henry VIII as pop icons in a musical remix to create a 21st century celebration of girl power! Featuring an all-woman cast and all-woman band, SIX has won 23 awards in the 2021-22 Broadway season including the Tony Award® for Best Original Score.

Capital City Pride Speaker Series: Zoey Luna
Thursday, Feb. 9 | Temple Theater
Come to be inspired, find confidence in your abilities and be encouraged to reach your full potential at the Capital City Pride Speaker Series highlighting LGBTQ+ community leaders. This month’s speaker is Zoey Luna, a pioneering transgender youth activist and actress. Her teenage years have been chronicled in several documentaries including MTV’s “Laverne Cox Presents: The T Word” and “Raising Zoey.”
