Operation Downtown's Dedication Leads to Recognition for Public Space Recycling Program
Operation Downtown works to keep Downtown Des Moines (DSM) safe, clean beautiful and hospitable. From maintaining planters to ambassadors connecting people to social services and giving friendly advice, Operation Downtown is committed to going the extra mile to improve the Downtown experience (or Downtown quality of life). This has also included the creation and execution of the Recycle DSM program. The program has been nationally recognized, and most recently for its efforts to overcome obstacles to public space recycling and creating a more sustainable downtown community.
Program Benefits
The Busch Systems recognition highlighted Downtown DSM’s recycling program as a program to learn from, one that has built a sustainable recycling program with a “dynamic spirit” that works to “continuously improve their program.” Recycle DSM focuses on collecting cans and plastic bottles, excluding glass containers.
By implementing best practices like “twinning”, standardized color, careful placement consideration and clear messaging, Operation Downtown has positioned Recycle DSM for long-term success. Outreach efforts have also helped Recycle DSM become known in the community. This includes flyers promoting accepted items, sidewalk murals next to the recycling locations, clear signage and more. The sidewalk murals’ elaborate messaging in particular received positive attention on The Partnership’s social media channels from the general public.
