5 Ways to Make the Most of Summer in Downtown DSM

Summer is in full swing and with it comes several fun and diverse activities in Downtown Des Moines (DSM). With so much to do, it can be hard to narrow down the list. So, we’ve done it for you. Whether you’re here to stay or just passing through, these five Downtown DSM experiences are a summer must.

1. Home run fun at the Iowa Cubs

With promotional games throughout the and fireworks every Friday, the Iowa Cubs offer fun for the whole family.

2. A walk in the park

Take a leisurely stroll through one of Downtown DSM’s many outdoor parks. The John and Mary Pappajohn Sculpture Park in Western Gateway showcases DSM’s unique art in an open, green space, and the Principal Riverwalk features lighted walkways along the river — perfect for an evening walk.

3. Good times under the sun

Nothing defines summer quite like sipping on a beer under the sun. Downtown DSM is home to world-class brewing with spots like Exile Brewing Company and Peace Tree Brewing. With patio seating, these breweries offer the chance to soak in those summer time vibes while overlooking the skyline.  

4. Shop 'til you drop

Shopping in Downtown DSM comes in all shapes, styles and tastes. From bakeries to gift and antiquity stores, to retail stores and boutiques, Downtown DSM lets you make the most of your shopping experience. Be sure to check out the nationally renowned screen print shop, Raygun, or one of the specialty shops in the Historic East Village!

5. Like music to your ears

Nitefall on the RiverDowntown DSM boasts an impressive music scene that has welcomed artists ranging from Ed Sheeran to Drake. The summer adds to the resume an impressive list of concert series’ like Nitefall on the River and 515 Alive. If you want to double down with number three on our list, head over to patio happy hours in the Historic Court District and the Historic East Village for drinks and live music by DSM locals.
