Downtown Des Moines Farmers’ Market Opening Day

Opening Day of the Downtown Des Moines Farmers’ Market is basically the unofficial kickoff to summer in DSM. Streets fill up early with vendors, music, food and that energy you only get on a perfect Saturday morning Downtown. With more than 300 vendors (including a bunch of new ones this year!), you can expect everything from fresh produce and baked goods to handmade items and local favorites. Whether you’re grabbing coffee and walking the route or stocking up for the week, this is one of those “plan your whole morning around it” kind of events.

Solar Party
Saturday, May 2, 2026 | Science Center of Iowa
If you’re already planning to be Downtown Saturday morning, this is an easy add to your routine. The Solar Party at Science Center of Iowa gives you a chance to safely check out the sun through special telescopes, spotting things like sunspots and solar activity you definitely can’t see on your own. It’s casual, free and totally drop-in, so you can swing by anytime between 9 and 11 a.m. It also happens during the Farmers’ Market, which makes it even easier to pair with your morning plans.
