If you haven’t explored Mainframe Studios during First Friday, this is the perfect month to check it out. Wander through five floors of open artist studios, meet local creatives, enjoy live music and discover new exhibitions around every corner. This month’s featured juried exhibition, Experimental & Innovative, celebrates artists who aren’t afraid to take creative risks, showcasing bold ideas and unconventional techniques. Along the way, you’ll also find interactive art activities, local food and drinks, making it easy to spend the evening exploring one of Downtown DSM’s most creative spaces. Admission is free and everyone is welcome.

Friday Night Skate

Trade your Friday night routine for an evening on wheels along the Des Moines River. Friday Night Skate transforms Brenton Skating Plaza into a lively gathering spot where families, friends and skaters of all skill levels can enjoy music, beautiful skyline views and plenty of fresh air. Bring your own roller skates or roller blades, lace up and cruise around the plaza while soaking in the Downtown atmosphere. Admission is just $5, making it an affordable way to spend the evening outdoors. If you miss this one, there’s one final Friday Night Skate planned for Friday, Sept. 4, 2026.
