There’s plenty happening in Downtown Des Moines (DSM) as August rolls along, with another week full of reasons to spend some time in the heart of the city. Catch a game, discover something new about downtown, bring the kids along for a morning outing or meet up with friends for an evening of music and friendly competition. This week’s lineup mixes longtime favorites with laid-back experiences that make it easy to fill your calendar without venturing far. Whether you have an entire afternoon to explore or just a couple of hours after work, here are five can’t-miss things to do in Downtown DSM Friday, Aug. 14 – Thursday, Aug. 20, 2026.
Architecture on the Move
Friday, Aug. 14, 2026 | Capital Square
You may have walked past some of Downtown DSM’s most interesting buildings without ever noticing the details that make them special. Architecture on the Move changes that with an architect-led walking tour that dives into the stories, history and design behind downtown’s built environment. Get a closer look at familiar landmarks and discover details that are easy to miss during an everyday walk through the city.

Iowa Cubs Home Series
Friday, Aug. 14 – Sunday, Aug. 16, 2026 | Principal Park Spend part of your weekend at Principal Park as the Iowa Cubs take on the St. Paul Saints for a home series, with each game offering a little something extra happening beyond the baseball.
- Friday, Aug. 14, 2026 — Friday Night Fireworks: Stick around after the final out for a fireworks show over Principal Park.
- Saturday, Aug. 15, 2026 — Catch on the Field: Arrive when the gates open for the chance to head onto the field and play catch before the game. Baseballs are provided.
- Sunday, Aug. 16, 2026 — Kids Run the Bases: After the game, kids can head onto the field and take their own lap around the bases.

Storytime Under the Big Green Umbrella
Wednesday, Aug. 19, 2026 | Cowles Commons
Bring the little ones downtown for a morning of stories, songs and plenty of imagination under the Big Green Umbrella at Cowles Commons. Designed for toddlers, preschoolers and early elementary-aged kids, this free program turns storytime into a fun outdoor experience for children and their grown-ups. Community partners including the Des Moines Public Library, Storyhouse Bookpub and children’s author Nalina Thandayuthapany help bring each gathering to life. Find a spot under the umbrella, settle in and enjoy an easy midweek outing that combines books, music and time together in the heart of Downtown DSM.

Blue Light Jazz
Wednesday, Aug. 19, 2026 | Surety Hotel
Give your Wednesday happy hour a live soundtrack with Blue Light Jazz at the Surety Hotel. Every first and third Wednesday of the month, the Lobby Lounge welcomes a rotating lineup of musicians curated by local jazz drummer Zane Gedler for two hours of smooth grooves and laid-back midweek vibes. Grab a drink, find a comfortable spot and let the music carry you through the rest of the workweek. The performance runs from 5-7 p.m., is free to attend and is open to guests ages 21 and older, making it an easy addition to your after-work plans.
