Architecture on the Move changes that with an architect-led walking tour that dives into the stories, history and design behind downtown’s built environment. Get a closer look at familiar landmarks and discover details that are easy to miss during an everyday walk through the city.

Iowa Cubs Home Series

Friday, Aug. 14 – Sunday, Aug. 16, 2026 | Principal Park
Spend part of your weekend at Principal Park as the Iowa Cubs take on the St. Paul Saints for a home series, with each game offering a little something extra happening beyond the baseball.

Friday, Aug. 14, 2026 — Friday Night Fireworks: Stick around after the final out for a fireworks show over Principal Park.
Saturday, Aug. 15, 2026 — Catch on the Field: Arrive when the gates open for the chance to head onto the field and play catch before the game. Baseballs are provided.

Community partners including the Des Moines Public Library, Storyhouse Bookpub and children’s author Nalina Thandayuthapany help bring each gathering to life. Give your Wednesday happy hour a live soundtrack with Blue Light Jazz at the Surety Hotel. Every first and third Wednesday of the month, the Lobby Lounge welcomes a rotating lineup of musicians curated by local jazz drummer Zane Gedler for two hours of smooth grooves and laid-back midweek vibes. Grab a drink, find a comfortable spot and let the music carry you through the rest of the workweek. The performance runs from 5-7 p.m., is free to attend and is open to guests ages 21 and older, making it an easy addition to your after-work plans.
