Spend an evening watching a movie under the sky, catch live music along the riverfront or gather some friends for a night out. You can even make an entire Saturday of exploring Downtown DSM from morning into the afternoon. Great Scott! Grab your blankets and lawn chairs because Back to the Future is headed to the big screen at Gray’s Lake Park. Free Flicks: Movies in the Park makes family movie night even better by taking it outside, with a giant LED screen and plenty of room to spread out under the evening sky. Pack your favorite movie snacks, find a comfortable spot and settle in for a trip back to 1985 with Marty McFly and Doc Brown. The movie begins at 6:30 p.m. and admission is free, making this a fun-filled Friday night outing for the whole family.

Little nature lovers can start their Friday with stories, plants and hands-on fun at the Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden. Story Sprouts is an interactive storytime designed especially for children ages 2-5, with each session pairing stories with an activity inspired by the week’s nature-focused theme. The program runs from 10:30-11 a.m., leaving plenty of time before or afterward to wander through the indoor and outdoor gardens. Story Sprouts is included with general admission to the Botanical Garden, while members receive free admission.

With the amphitheater tucked into one of the city’s largest parks, you’ll get the atmosphere of an outdoor summer concert without leaving downtown. Head to Rook Room Game Lounge & Cafe for an evening of Mahjong Open Play from 4-8 p.m. Beginners can learn the basics, while experienced players can meet new opponents and get another game on the table. American, Chinese and Riichi styles are all welcome, and you can drop in for a round or stay awhile. A limited number of tiles and Mahjong cards will be available, so bring your own set if you have one.
