Beginning March 1, Women’s History Month events will take place across Greater Des Moines (DSM) to showcase the contributions and achievements of women. Find resources for women business owners below and female-centric organizations and celebrate Women’s History Month with events across DSM in 2022.


Women’s History Month Scavenger Hunt

Take part in a scavenger hunt to celebrate Women’s History Month at the North Side Library beginning Tuesday, March 1. LEARN MORE>

Barbara Lee Virtual Screening Room

In March, the Carrie Chapman Catt Center for Women and Politics at Iowa State University will offer a virtual discussion on the documentary about Rep. Barbara Lee, “Barbara Lee: Speaking Truth to Power,” taking place at 5 p.m. on Thursday, March 3. LEARN MORE>

National Women in Construction Week Events

Starting Monday, March 7, there will be events celebrating Women in Construction Week that focus on leadership and networking. Mentoring for Women Events

Mentoring for Women events will be held from 7:30 – 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 8 at the Sheraton West Des Moines and from 8 – 11:30 a.m. Thursday, March 24 at West 48 in West Des Moines. Hear from speakers and meet with civic-minded women in the region. LEARN MORE>

3rd Annual Period Packing Party

In honor of International Women’s Day, the third annual Period Packing Party will take place from 1 – 3 p.m. Tuesday, March 8 at The Hall DSM in West Des Moines. LEARN MORE>

Iowa History 101: Iowa Women’s Archives

At Noon on Thursday, March 10, Anna Holland from the Iowa Women’s Archives will share about Mary Louise Smith, the first woman to chair the Republican National Committee, and Louise Noun, author of “Strong Minded Women: The Emergence of the Woman-Suffrage Movement in Iowa.” LEARN MORE>

Cherish the Ladies

Celebrate women in the male-dominated Celtic music scene by attending a Celtic Music Association event with Cherish the Ladies. The concert will begin at 8 p.m. Friday, March 11 at Franklin Junior High. Doors open at 7 p.m., and you can purchase tickets now. Learn More>

Women in the Woods with Wine

Register for this 21+ event where you can get outside with other women and learn about the natural world. The cost is $15. The event will take place from 7 – 9 p.m. Tuesday, March 15 at Jester Park Nature Center. LEARN MORE>

Empowerment Workshops

The Young Women’s Resource Center will hold Empowerment Workshops for fifth through seventh graders on Tuesday, March 15 and for eighth through twelfth graders on Wednesday, March 16. The workshops will be free and held virtually. LEARN MORE>

Resources for Women in DSM

There are many organizations for women and girls in DSM. For women interested in supporting the arts and education in Des Moines, the Des Moines Women’s Club will hold a New Member Meet and Greet on Wednesday, March 23 at 11 a.m. Prior to the event, find out about how to become a member here. Interested in helping build a better DSM? Junior League of Des Moines will help you meet other women interested in volunteering and improving the community. If you’re a female business owner in the region, consider membership with the National Association of Women Business Owners in Iowa, or NAWBO Iowa. NAWBO Iowa will hold two events, including “Developing Your Team” and “Cocktails and Conversation.” Finally, Women United, an organization through United Way of Central Iowa, works to improve children’s lives through early care and learning opportunities. When you give to this organization, through investment or volunteering, you help create and grow programs for young children in DSM.

Christina Moffatt serves as director of small business resources at the Greater Des Moines Partnership. She most recently served as Regional Director for the Iowa Small Business Development Center (SBDC), overseeing Dallas, Polk, Jasper, Warren and Marion Counties.
