Greater des moines workforce

The Greater Des Moines workforce is some of the best in the country. In addition to having a labor force participation rate of 71% in the Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA), 88.5% of the participating labor force in Greater Des Moines are between the ages of 25 and 64 (JobsEQ, 2025). The median age according the U.S. Census Bureau is 36.9 in the MSA. 

Greater Des Moines' workforce is highly educated and productive. 93.4% of the population over the age of 25 in the laborshed area have a high school education or beyond, with 52% having an Associate’s degree or higher and over 41% holding a Bachelor’s degree or higher in the MSA (JobsEQ, 2025).  

Greater Des Moines' 12-county population is 885,796 (U.S. Census Bureau, 2024) and has grown an average of 1.3% each year over the last decade. The laborshed labor force as of 2023 was 747,976 according to Iowa Workforce Development.
