Economic Development Momentum: Helena Industries, NeXT1

The Iowa Economic Development Authority Board of Directors has approved financial assistance for the following projects. The Greater Des Moines Partnership’s economic development team worked with the City of Des Moines on both projects.

  • Helena Industries, LLC, a subsidiary of Helena Agri-Enterprises LLC headquartered in Collierville, Tennessee, is considering a major expansion project at its facility in the City of Des Moines Agrimergent Park. The $47 million project will include a 100,000-square-foot facility for the production of multiple agriculture herbicides, a 50,000-square-foot facility for a flowable manufacturing plant, and a 200,000 square-foot warehouse. The project will create 25 jobs. Helena Industries is a toll manufacturer of chemical products and it has four plants in the United States, including the Des Moines facility.
  • NeXT1, Inc.’s mission is to find innovative scientific and medical technologies and move them toward commercialization. The initial project includes DNA/RNA storage techniques. NeXT1 plans to lease a newly constructed facility in Des Moines, located on Second Avenue. The construction cost associated with the building is $1.5 million.
