What to Expect

Each Saturday, the streets of DSM’s Historic Court district come alive with the sights, sounds and flavors of local vendors. Visitors can expect an exciting atmosphere, seasonal offerings and one-of-a-kind finds in each booth. Musicians and entertainers can be found throughout The Market, too.

What to Bring

Some vendors offer plastic bags with their purchases, but it’s best to bring your own reusable bag. The Market also sells jute shopping bags, cooling bags and reusable bags at the Information Booth, located at Third Street and Court Avenue. Shoppers can also rent a wagon at the Market Resource Tent sponsored by Principal Foundation to transport large purchases to their vehicle.

If you plan to purchase refrigerated items or other products that should stay cool, consider bringing a cooler, too.

Make sure to wear walking shoes and dress appropriately for the weather. The Market is open rain or shine, so dress accordingly.

Pets at The Market

The Market encourages visitors to leave their pets at home, as the environment can be overwhelming for many pets. If patrons do choose to bring their pets, they are expected to act in a responsible manner and adhere to these rules to make everyone’s Market experience pleasant.

  • Service animals are permitted at The Market, per City of Des Moines regulations.
Dogs and pets must be under control and on a short leash (maximum three feet long) and by the owner's side at all times.
  • Pets need to be kept away from produce, plants and prepared food products.
  • Pets need to be courteous and able to socialize with people and other pets.
  • Be understanding. Not everyone loves pets and some fear them.
  • The Market operates under the City of Des Moines’ laws regarding pets, which include a dog leash law, cleanup of droppings, current tags and a current rabies certificate.
  • Bring cleanup bags or use bags provided around The Market located in dispensers on various light poles.
