Why Interns Matter + How EMC is Making a Difference
EMC's paid internship program, Experience EMC, has long been a vital part of our business — even our President and CEO Scott Jean started as an intern! We created this program to give interns some real-deal professional experience and inspire them to check out what a career in insurance is all about.
While plenty of companies provide intern opportunities, EMC has its unique perks. Here, I'll explain what they are and how they're helping countless students each year — including some who are now full-time team members.
What Sets Experience EMC Apart
Our internship program is designed to do more than teach interns about the insurance industry and our company. It also offers them the chance to improve their professional skills through workshops, training sessions, networking functions and so much more. Hear some highlights from of our 2023 interns.
Here are a few things our program provides, which we continue to evolve based on our interns' feedback:
-
Real work experience with meaningful projects that directly contribute to the goals of the interns’ departments
-
An executive networking event where interns have the chance to hear from, and meet, our strategic leadership team
-
A professional development curriculum, covering presentations tailored to skills and leadership development
-
A mentor program where current EMC leaders serve as mentors, helping interns with their job responsibilities and offering guidance as they consider their future careers
-
Volunteer and social activities to highlight the importance of corporate social responsibility
-
Job shadowing and cross-functional department exposure to enhance their understanding of EMC and careers in insurance
-
Intern-to-intern communication through a private LinkedIn Group and a Microsoft Teams channel to network, collaborate and learn more about EMC
-
A virtual work environment, which limits potential geographical constraints and allows interns across the globe the opportunity to work with EMC
In 2023, EMC hired 36 college summer interns and eight high school summer interns — five of which are transitioning to full-time roles! These positions were part of 19 total departments, including:
-
Information Technology
- Marketing & Communications
- Human Resources
- Claims
- Strategic Analytics
- Underwriting
- Actuary
- Agile Center of Excellence
- Loss Control
We make an effort to provide our interns with genuine opportunities to continue their journey with our company, when possible, which we believe plays a crucial role in shaping our company culture.
