Philanthropy [fi-lan-thruh-pee]

Philanthro-what? While at first glance, the word itself can be very intimidating — go ahead and feel free to sound it out in your mind a few times — the meaning behind it is equally rewarding. Some of you might be very familiar with this concept, while others might be hearing it for the first time. Regardless of your experience with philanthropy, I am very happy to be able to have the opportunity to share with you what it means to me, and how it truly reflects not just why, but also How I YPC.

If you take the time to research the history behind philanthropy, you will find that it is generally agreed upon that the word lay claim to the ancient Greeks as "the love of humanity," — love in the sense of caring for, nourishing, developing or enhancing human kind.

In modern practical terms, it is often referenced as a private initiative for public good that focuses on the quality of life; reflecting a balance of the social-scientific aspects of the 20th century, and the long-standing traditional humanistic cores of our society's ancient beliefs.

Since the turn of the 21st century, you will find that is has been spoken of as the altruistic concern for humanwelfare and advancement, often manifested with donations of money, property or work to needy persons and/or other socially useful purposes.

As the meaning of philanthropy has greatly evolved since its ancient Greek origins, it is easy to see that there are many different notions that have helped encompass just how truly significant this concept is.

Giving Time, Talents and Treasures Ensures Success of Greater Des Moines (DSM) Community

It is in my role as the Volunteer Committee Chair with Young Professionals Connection (YPC) that I am truly privileged to be able to carry out my passion for philanthropy. Whether through leading a monthly committee meeting, empowering others to get involved and take on leadership roles, collaborating with other committees to promote and educate our peers about local charitable causes or spending a Saturday afternoon conducting a donation drive — these all take the form of giving one's time, talent and treasure.

As my knowledge and experiences within the philanthropic sector date back to volunteering in ninth grade, perhaps the biggest lesson that I am always proud to pass on and challenge individuals with is this: It is important to remember that the ultimate power and impact of giving back to your community truly starts with YOU. There is no greater value of giving than that which comes from your own time, talent and treasure.
