Historic East Village to Host 12 Days of Promenade

October 29, 2020

GREATER DES MOINES, IA (Oct. 29, 2020) – The 19th annual Holiday Promenade in Historic East Village returns this holiday season with even more festivities, cheer and merriment. Traditional activities are set to take place over six weeks, beginning mid-November and extending into late December. Programming will occur on six Sundays and six Wednesdays creating the 12 Days of Promenade. After a challenging year, the 12 Days of Promenade aims to safely bring beauty, tradition, commerce, comfort and joy to the community this holiday season.

Each Sunday of the 12 Days of Promenade will feature a holiday activity, while businesses will have special deals, features and extended hours each Wednesday. Sunday activities include a scavenger hunt, horse-drawn carriage rides, International Celebrity Santa Claus, wreath walk, Santa’s elves and reindeer games. New this year, the Des Moines Arts Festival® has partnered with Wooly’s to host artists and makers during the Holiday Promenade. Each week there will be a small group of artists or makers, spaced out in Wooly’s. In addition to the festive programming, special parking meters will be reserved on Sundays throughout the Historic East Village for easy online order pickup.

The Historic East Village provides a unique experience for the community with a mix of shops, restaurants and attractions including Brenton Skating Plaza, the Des Moines Botanical Garden, the State Historical Building and the Iowa State Capitol. The neighborhood’s outdoor atmosphere with festive lights and historic buildings creates a charming backdrop for the 12 Days of Promenade.

Businesses in the Historic East Village take the COVID-19 pandemic very seriously. In preparation for the event, additional signage will be created to remind visitors to wear a mask and stay socially distanced from others. Individual businesses will manage their guest capacity according to their storefront’s square footage. Event activities will take place outdoors and will be managed with safety as a top priority.

The 12 Days of Promenade are sponsored by MidAmerican Energy Company, Iowa State Bank, 111 E. Grand, Marv’s Music, The Patty & Jim Cownie Charitable Fund, Beal Derkenne Construction, Christensen Development, LifeServe Blood Center, Community Choice Credit Union, Wooly’s, Kitchen Collage and Porch Light and are supported by numerous Historic East Village retailers.

Attendees are also encouraged to attend the Des Moines Drive-Through Winter Farmers’ and Makers’ Market presented by UnityPoint Health – Des Moines, which will take place from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. on Nov. 21 at the Principal Park parking lot in Downtown DSM.
