Des Moines Farmers' Markets: Downtown vs. Valley Junction
When I first moved to Des Moines, the Downtown Farmers' Market was one of the first things I heard about. I checked it out during my first week in the city and was amazed — Downtown Des Moines' (DSM's) market was massive, full of life, color and energy.
A few months later, a fellow participant in the Des Moines Fellowship told me about another well-known farmers market in West Des Moines, located in Historic Valley Junction, a historic district with over 150 locally owned businesses. Of course, I had to visit this one as well.
Both have their unique charm, offerings and atmosphere, and each caters to a slightly different experience.
Downtown Des Moines Farmers' Market
The Downtown Farmers' Market is undeniably the larger of the two. It spans several city blocks, filling the streets with the sights and smells of fresh produce, artisan goods and prepared meals. It operates every Saturday from the beginning of May to the end of October.
Walking through The Market, you’ll encounter dozens of vendors selling everything from locally grown fruits and vegetables to baked goods, cheeses and ready-to-eat meals. There’s a strong sense of energy and movement as families, couples and solo visitors navigate the crowd. While prices can be higher than grocery stores, the quality stands out. I always grab beets here — they’re bigger, brighter and far more flavorful.
I think some stalls rotate, but many remain consistent. Still, I’m haunted by a chocolate tart with caramel filling I tried once and could never find again — either the vendor left, or The Market is so big I’m making the wrong turns.
Music is another highlight. Street performers set up about every block, from solo guitarists to small bands. My favorite is the man who plays the pan flute — his music always makes me slow down and enjoy the moment.
One thing to note: The Market can get very crowded, especially after 9 a.m. If you’re looking for a calmer experience or want first pick at the best produce, early arrival is essential.

Valley Junction Farmers' Market
Valley Junction’s Thursday evening market (4–8 p.m.) offers a smaller, more community-focused atmosphere. It’s still buzzing with visitors and full of activity, but the pace feels a bit more relaxed compared to the Saturday downtown rush. The market takes over one Main Street, surrounded by charming historic buildings, giving it a relaxed, spacious feel.
I’ve found that Valley Junction hosts more live music overall, featuring a diverse range of performers — from high school bands to senior community groups. While there’s still produce, I notice more emphasis on prepared foods, artisan goods and crafts. The gyro bowl I had there was amazing! Beyond the stalls, exploring the surrounding shops is part of the fun. On one trip, I found an antique store selling everything from vintage vending machines to neon signs.

One challenge at Valley Junction was parking for me. On one visit, I ended up parking at a nearby park and walked for 20 minutes, which isn’t that bad, but not ideal in the hot weather. However, this gave me a great opportunity to explore the neighborhood, and I found a cute Mexican grocery where I was able to buy candies and ice cream.

Which One Should You Choose?
Both markets offer unique experiences that reflect the character of their respective neighborhoods. If you’re looking for a large-scale event with a wide variety of vendors, fresh produce and the energy of a bustling city block, Downtown DSM is your destination. On the other hand, if you prefer a more relaxed, community-oriented atmosphere with local music and food-focused offerings, I recommend the Valley Junction market. Apparently, there’s also a winter indoor farmers' market from November to April, so I’ll have to check that out too! It sounds like a great way to keep the farmers' market spirit alive year-round.
However, I highly recommend visiting both to check out the vibes of each one! They are both fun and have lots to offer!
