World Food & Music Celebration Announces More Programming

September 9, 2020

(GREATER DES MOINES, IOWA) Wednesday, Sept. 9, 2020 — The World Food & Music Celebration has released several additional activities and resources in conjunction with the scheduled events to bring the festivities into your home. The World Food & Music Celebration will occur in conjunction with National Welcoming Week and DSM USA Welcoming week from Sept. 12 – 20.

For the first time ever, The Celebration is sharing 16 recipes from our collection online so that you can create them in the comfort of your own kitchen. This collection is based on a long-time favorite stop Culinary Discovery Pavilion, where local chefs have demonstrated their culinary prowess and shared delectable creations. You can check out the recipes here. The World Food & Music Celebration has also provided a list of diverse restaurants open for in-person dining or carryout.

The Celebration is offering a series of cultural kits sponsored by Veridian Credit Union and produced in partnership with CultureALL for community members to pick up. Community members can pick up a kit on Sunday, Sept. 13 from 2 – 5 p.m. at the Iowa State Historical Building portico, with access from East Locust Street near East 7th Street. There will be 1,000 free kits produced to be given away. Activities include Brazilian ganzá, Filipino Sipà, loi krathong art project, Kenyan bead bracelet and Mexican artesanía paper flowers. Kits will be available first-come, first-served and while supplies last.

Flags representing countries from around the world will be hung throughout the Historic East Village during The Celebration week.

The Celebration will also partner with the Revive the Live Drive-In Concert Series on Saturday, Sept. 19. There will be local food vendors on-site along with festival merchandise.

Voting for the previously announced Bye-Bye Summer Brunch Bracket sponsored by Bankers Trust is up and running. You can vote for your favorite DSM brunch spot and cheer them on to number one on Facebook. Voting rounds are as follows:

  • Sept. 9 –11: Sweet and Savory Sixteen
  • Sept.12 –14: Egg-Citing Eight
  • Sept. 15 –17: The Final Fork

As previously announced, The Community Cookout presented by MidAmerican Energy Company will be on Saturday, Sept. 12. We invite residents across the region to decorate their driveways and balconies for a home tailgate to show support for your favorite team, whether it be football, baseball, basketball, hockey or any other sport. Not a fan of sports? Decorate your tailgate with a global feel, reflect your own personal heritage or make your own mini-World Food & Music Festival. Residents are encouraged to cook dishes that represent your heritage, a special tradition or a dish that has a personal meaning. Participants can enter to win a prize package by sharing a picture of their tailgate and special dish to the Community Cookout Event on Facebook.

The World Food & Music Celebration is possible through the generosity of its sponsors: Bravo Greater Des Moines, Principal, Nationwide, Voya Financial, Bankers Trust, Des Moines Register / LOCALiQ, MidAmerican Energy Company, Veridian Credit Union, DART and Doll Distributing.

The World Food & Music Festival and World Food & Music Celebration are produced by the Greater Des Moines Partnership. A traditional Festival format is scheduled to return September 17 – 19, 2021.
