Q&A

What’s a day in your job like? Every day is different! In a small nonprofit, I often wear many hats, but some of my main responsibilities include meeting with individual donors, managing fundraising mailings, creating partnerships with local businesses and writing a monthly newsletter. I also help secure sponsorships, assist in the planning of events and oversee the management of our social media and website for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Iowa.

What are your passions outside of work? When you’re not at work, what will we find you doing? I love being involved in the Greater Des Moines (DSM) community, especially with YPC. I also enjoy cheering on the Hawkeyes, going to a class at Power Life Yoga or enjoying a drink with friends. I like exploring all that Des Moines has to offer, including trying new restaurants and experiencing events in the community.

Where’s your favorite place to eat in Des Moines? Louie’s Wine Dive. I love the fun atmosphere, the food is delicious and there is always good wine to try, too.

What role has mentorship played in your career? Mentoring is my career! As an employee at a nonprofit mentoring organization, I see the impact that mentors have, young and old, every day. For me personally, my mentors have helped me become a better networker and opened opportunities for me that I would never have had otherwise. And I am so thankful for that.

What’s a piece of career advice that has served you well? Be willing to be vulnerable. I have learned it’s impossible to know all the answers, all of the time. It’s important to be honest and open to feedback, and I am always looking for a way to learn, even if I’m in a situation where I think I know it all.

What projects have you been involved with in YPC? I have served on the Volunteer Committee for two years where I have helped with the YPC Volunteer Fair and a Paws and Pints event with the Animal Rescue League. I have also been an ambassador and enjoyed the inaugural gala, Sips and Sights and many monthly socials.
