Most people think of Chicago as a separate economy. Geography suggests something different. The two regions are more connected than many people realize.
In reality, it helps shape ours.
More Connected Than We Think
For decades, economic development has often been framed as a competition between cities. Which metro is growing faster? Which region attracted the newest corporate headquarters? Which community landed the latest economic development project?
Those comparisons make for interesting headlines, but they don't always reflect how regional economies actually work.
The Midwest functions less as a collection of competing cities and more as a connected system. Businesses buy from suppliers across state lines. Manufacturers depend on regional distribution networks. Financial institutions serve customers throughout the Midwest. Workers travel between metropolitan areas, and companies recruit talent wherever they can find it.
Large metropolitan areas influence places far beyond their own boundaries.
Think about where many Iowa companies do business. Manufacturers sell into the Chicago market. Financial firms insure businesses throughout the Midwest. Agricultural products move through Chicago's transportation network before reaching customers across the country. Those connections exist every day, even if we rarely notice them.
They become centers for commerce, finance, transportation, higher education and innovation. As businesses grow, those connections spread outward through supply chains, investment, and the movement of people.
