What's in Season? Eat Fresh & Local in DSM: June Edition
June brings the start of summer and some of Greater Des Moines’ (DSM) most anticipated seasonal flavors. Strawberry season is in full swing; blueberries are beginning to appear; lavender is blooming and farmers markets are packed with fresh produce. From you-pick adventures and farm dinners to berry-inspired drinks and sweet treats, there are plenty of ways to enjoy what’s fresh this month. Here’s your guide to eating seasonal in DSM this June.

What’s In Season in June in DSM
Strawberries
June is peak strawberry season in DSM, with fresh berries showing up at farmers' markets, farm stands, dessert menus and you-pick farms throughout the region.
Sugar Snap Peas
Crunchy, sweet and perfect for snacking, sugar snap peas are one of the first summer vegetables to arrive at DSM gardens and farmers’ markets.
Blueberries
While much of DSM’s blueberry season arrives later in summer, June marks the start of picking season at some farms and the arrival of blueberry-inspired drinks, pastries and desserts.
Summer Greens
Lettuces, arugula and other greens continue to thrive in early summer and frequently appear in seasonal salads and farm-to-table menus.
Herbs
Fresh basil, dill, mint and other herbs are making their way into seasonal dishes, cocktails and summer beverages across DSM.
Lavender
Lavender begins blooming in early summer and brings floral flavor to seasonal drinks, baked goods and desserts. Look for lavender-inspired lattes, lemonades, cocktails and sweet treats throughout the region.
