Downtown Farmers' Market to Host Drive-Through Bite-Size Market

GREATER DES MOINES, IA (July 30, 2020) – The Downtown Farmers’ Market presented by UnityPoint Health — Des Moines is announcing a drive-through option. The Drive-Through Bite-Size Market will take place each Saturday from 8 – 11 a.m. at the Iowa State Capitol complex parking lot located at E. 13th and E. Grand Avenue in Downtown Des Moines (DSM) starting on Aug. 8 through Oct. 31. Customers can pre-order produce, meat, eggs, cheese, artisan food items, baked goods and flowers/plants through the Drive-Through Online Marketplace in advance and can pick-up specific purchased items at The Bite-Size Drive-Through Market the following Saturday. Customers can also purchase items from onsite but must remain in their vehicles.

Access to the drive-through space will be controlled and monitored, while limiting the number of customer vehicles. All vendors and staff will be required to wear masks.

“During this pandemic, it continues to be important to find a safe way to provide community members Downtown Farmers’ Market food and products,” said Kelly Foss, Director of the Downtown Farmers’ Market. “Our team continues to find creative solutions to provide an essential service that allows people to pre-order items for pick up or shop safely from their vehicles at The Drive-Through Bite-Size Market.”

Many vendors have their products available for purchase through the Downtown Farmers’ Marketplace Online, which will give customers the option of ordering online and meeting customers at a specified location. The Online Marketplace also features a number of vendors that will not be on site.

The Drive-Through Online Marketplace virtual system will be released soon. This process will allow customers to pre-order items prior to the Drive-Through Bite-Size Market taking place each Saturday.

There will be several safety measures at the drive-through site including the following:

  • Vendors and staff members will be required to wear a face covering and gloves.
  • Adequate space to ensure vendors can stay 6-feet apart and not gather in groups.
  • Customers will remain in their vehicles. Vendors will provide items to the customers.
  • There will be a main entrance point for vehicles to drive-through and pick up their Online Marketplace pre-ordered items.
  • Pre-sales will be done via the Drive-Through Online Marketplace. This online system is coming soon. On-site sales are also available.
